Pancha means five
Karma means actions
Actions refer to the five forms of detox therapy you may experience during a Panchakarma.
At Oneworld Ayurveda, you will have an in-depth consultation with our Ayurvedic doctors who will assess your Dosha imbalances and medical condition. The doctors will then prescribe a treatment plan including one or more of these detox therapies depending on your condition and the number of days you are staying onsite.
Below we describe the five actions:
- Virechana – medicine-induced purgation
Oral medicines are given to induce purgation (evacuation of the bowels). Recommended for Pitta-dominated conditions.
- Vamana – medicine-induced vomiting
Oral medicines are given to induce vomiting. This helps to eliminate toxins from the tissues. Especially recommended for Kapha-dominated conditions.
- Nasya – nasal detox
Medicated oil or powder is administered through the nostrils. This treatment clears and cleanses the entire head region and relieves various ailments.
- Basti – medicated enema
Medicated oil or decoction is administered through the anus. Especially effective for Vata predominant conditions.
- Raktamokshan – bloodletting
Impure blood is drained out through various means such as needle-pricking, venesection, and leeching. Cleanses the blood, either in a specific area or the entire body. Useful in various skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema and local lesions such as abscesses and pigmentation.
Stages of a Panchakarma
- Poorva Karma (preparatory procedures)
In this phase, the body and mind are prepared with various treatments for cleansing. The treatments help to dislodge the deep-seated toxins in the body and make them ready for elimination. The treatments used are among others Snehana Karma (oleation therapy) and Swedana Karma (sudation therapy).
- Panchakarma (detox/cleansing therapies)
During your Panchakarma therapies, you will be closely monitored by our doctors to make sure they are safe, effective and you get the best results possible.
- Pashchaath karma (post-therapeutic dietetics)
Designed to enhance and re-establish the digestive fire. A specially tailored diet to continue after the completion of detox treatments to strengthen the benefits of Panchakarma.
