To those who may not be familiar with the term, what is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the ancient science of life originating in India 3,000 to 5,000 years ago. This holistic science advocates that health and wellness depend upon a delicate balance between the mind, the body and the spirit. It is based on concepts in maintaining health and preventing and curing disease by promoting the use of herbal compounds, special diets, and further unique health practices.

Ayurveda is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ system. Instead, its regimens are tailored to each person’s unique Prakruti (Ayurvedic constitution), taking into account his or her needs for nutrition, exercise, personal hygiene, social interaction and other lifestyle elements.

Daily routines, called Dincharya, and seasonal regimens, called Ritucharya, are recommended. Following these individualised plans helps users of Ayurveda to attain robust physical health as well as mental and spiritual harmony.

How has Ayurveda benefited your life?

Ayurveda helps me to listen to my body and mind. I am a complete foodie and I enjoy trying different cuisines. When I eat food which my tongue likes but my body doesn’t, I know what spices and herbs I have to include in my diet the next day in order to better digest and detox my body in a natural way. I cook food according to the state of my bio-energy and this helps me to stay healthy. I have been a regular practitioner of yoga for 15 years now; my knowledge of Ayurveda has also helped me in selecting the most suitable yoga program for my Prakriti (body-mind type).

Tell us about Panchakarma

An Ayurvedic Panchakarma or PK is a detoxing programme with long-lasting health benefits. Panchakarma in Sanskrit means ‘five actions’ which are treatments integral to the ayurvedic process of purifying the body. At Oneworld Ayurveda, your PK programme is put together according to the number of days you have chosen to stay with us and your health issues. The initial diagnosis and daily consultations with the physician will ensure you receive the best treatments. The longer the stay, the more efficient the PK.

There are many reasons you should experience a PK. Maybe you are in need of a serious detox, suffering from anxiety, insomnia and a lack of energy. There are many ways to detox, yet none come close to a PK during which the body and mind feel the progress day by day. A Panchakarma also delays the inner and outer aging process naturally, helping you to age gracefully.

And now, can you tell us more about yourself?

I was born into a traditional family which lives the principles of Ayurveda. My father is a very successful Ayurveda physician running a traditional Ayurveda hospital healing thousands of people in Kerala, India.

I grew up eating and living healthy. Whenever any of our family members fell sick, my father gave us herbs which healed us. My mom has always cooked special food ‘The Ayurveda Way’ with a variety of healing spices and herbs. It was the confidence in Ayurveda which grew along with me; when it came to selecting a profession, I chose to be an Ayurvedic doctor, who is able heal people physically, mentally and spiritually.

I am blessed to be married to Dr. Abhishek Joshi, who was my senior in post-graduate and PhD in Ayurveda college. He helps and supports me in living my life to the fullest. My PhD research was on Anxiety and I developed a yogic protocol and Ayurvedic medicines which benefit my patients, especially with regard to this issue.
